# Sewer Liners | KCSR University

Explore what lining can—and cannot—do.

General educational information—not a diagnosis or engineering, legal or insurance advice. A qualified professional must assess your property; local rules and your actual policy or contract control.

## What does CIPP sewer lining actually do inside an old pipe?

Cured-in-place pipe, or CIPP, uses a liner installed and cured inside an existing pipe. It is a rehabilitation method, not the same as replacing the pipe by excavation or pipe bursting. Suitability depends on the existing pipe, the chosen system and the installation plan. Ask to see a sample and identify the proposed resin, liner and curing method. The proposal should describe the treated length and connections so you know what will—and will not—be rehabilitated.

## Is lining my sewer worth the cost, or will I still need replacement?

The useful comparison is between suitable scopes for your actual pipe. Ask which defects lining would address, which sections would remain untreated and whether the pipe’s shape or condition makes another method more appropriate. A lower initial bid does not answer all of those questions. Compare lining with a clearly defined repair or replacement alternative. Ask for the reason the chosen system suits this pipe, and make sure the proposal does not imply that untreated sections receive the same benefit.

## Does a liner make the pipe too narrow and increase clogging?

A liner occupies some space inside the pipe. Whether the finished system is suitable depends on the existing diameter, liner design, connections and installation quality. Ask the installer how sizing and flow are evaluated for your line instead of accepting a blanket “no effect” claim. Ask what the finished opening will be and how branches or transitions will be handled. A sample can explain the concept, but your actual pipe dimensions and installation plan determine the answer.

## Can a liner fix a sewer belly, or does the pipe's slope still need correction?

Lining generally follows the existing pipe’s path; it is not a method for regrading a low spot. A belly needs its own assessment. Ask whether correcting slope is necessary and how any proposed lining or repair would address—or leave—the low section. If a proposal includes lining despite standing water, ask for a written explanation of the low spot and any separate correction. Sealing defects and changing the pipe’s slope are different objectives.

## Can I line only the damaged few feet instead of the entire sewer?

Localized rehabilitation may be an option for some defects, but the limits of treatment matter. Ask how a short repair connects to the remaining pipe and what inspection evidence supports leaving the rest untreated. Compare the full scopes and residual risks, not just footage. Ask to see the proposed repair endpoints on the inspection recording. A short repair should have a defined purpose and acceptance plan, with the condition of the unlined sections documented separately.

## Should I pay for a sewer scope when the seller says a liner was installed last year?

A recent liner does not tell you everything about the sewer. Ask for the installed limits, completion video and written warranty, and discuss an independent scope with your inspection professional. Confirm whether any sections or connections were left outside the work. The invoice alone may not show whether the entire lateral was treated. Ask the inspection professional to distinguish the lined segment from remaining original pipe and explain any limitations of the current inspection.

## How dependable is sewer relining over the long term?

Long-term performance depends on the system, preparation, design, curing and finished installation. Ask for documented completion checks and the actual warranty rather than treating a service-life claim as a guarantee. Ongoing condition and maintenance still matter. Ask who performed the work and what system-specific training and quality records are available. A long advertised design life does not tell you what remedy is available if a particular installation develops a problem.

## Can CIPP handle bends, pipe-material changes and changes in diameter?

Some systems are designed for particular bends and transitions, but limits are product- and site-specific. Have the installer identify the exact system and explain how your pipe’s geometry and connections fit its requirements. Not every configuration is a suitable lining candidate. For example, HammerHead lists defined bend and single-transition capabilities for its Bluelight Flex LED liner. That is a specific product description, not proof that every HammerHead system or every sewer layout qualifies.

## During lining, when can we use toilets and water, and what should we do about odors?

Get written, process-specific instructions from the installer before the work. They should explain the water-use interruption, when service can resume and whom to contact about odors or other concerns. Resin and curing methods vary; do not assume another project’s instructions apply to your home. Make sure everyone in the household receives the instructions, including tenants or visitors. Report strong or unexpected odors promptly through the project contact; do not accept a blanket assurance that every odor is harmless.

## What inspections, completion video and warranty details should I receive after lining?

Ask for a clear record of the work limits, completion inspection/video and any required acceptance checks. Obtain the actual warranty with coverage, exclusions, maintenance conditions and transferability in writing. Keep these records with your home documents for future maintenance or a sale. Ask which checks are required by the local authority and which are included by the installer. A clear camera recording is useful evidence, but it does not independently prove every design, curing or code requirement was satisfied.
