When a sewer line needs work, it’s natural to want the least disruptive option. But lining, spot repair and replacement solve different problems. The condition of your pipe determines which options are worth considering.
A camera inspection helps put that decision on firmer ground. Here’s what to discuss before choosing a method.
Start With What the Inspection Shows
Ask where the damage is, how much pipe is affected and what condition the remaining line is in. One broken section is different from widespread deterioration or a line with a slope problem.
Look at the surrounding pipe as well as the most obvious damage. That broader picture helps explain whether a targeted repair is enough or whether more work is warranted.
Know What Each Method Can Do
A spot repair replaces a particular damaged section while leaving serviceable pipe in place. Sewer line replacement addresses a longer portion or the full line.
Cured-in-place pipe lining, or CIPP, installs a new liner inside a suitable existing sewer. It can reduce excavation along the route, depending on access and preparation needs.
Lining also has limits. It follows the existing pipe’s shape, so it won’t raise a belly or correct the slope. A collapse or severe offset may need excavation first. Those repairs change the amount of digging and the overall price.
Compare the Complete Project
Look beyond the cost of installing pipe or liner. Include cleaning, access, connections, separate repairs, final inspection and surface restoration.
On one property, lining may reduce restoration work. On another, replacement may better address the underlying condition. Ask how the proposed method solves your specific problem.
Review the workmanship warranty and how unexpected conditions are handled, too. You should understand both the repair and the terms before committing.
